Boston to New York is one of the busiest trips in the country, and most people take the train or a short flight. A car service is the less obvious choice, but for some trips it is clearly the better one. Here is what to expect on time, cost and comfort, and when a car makes the most sense.
How long does it take?
Plan on about four hours from Boston to Midtown Manhattan outside rush hour. The biggest variable is traffic on the approach to New York, which can add an hour or more on Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings and before holidays. Leaving Boston early in the morning, or after the evening peak, usually gives the smoothest run.
There are two main routes. I-95 follows the coast through Providence and southern Connecticut. The inland route takes the Mass Pike and I-84 through Hartford. Your chauffeur picks the better one on the day based on live traffic.
What does it cost?
Car service between Boston and New York is priced on distance and time for the vehicle you choose. As a guide from our own pricing engine, a sedan from Boston to Midtown Manhattan is currently from $1,025, and an SUV that seats six is from $1,241, gratuity included. Tolls are added at cost. Your exact quote appears in the booking form before you confirm, and nothing is charged until after the ride.
How it compares
The train is the default for solo travellers going station to station, and it is hard to beat for a single person with a small bag. The total journey, though, includes getting to South Station, the train itself, and getting from Penn Station or Grand Central to your final address.
A short flight is quick in the air but slow around it: the drive to Logan, security, boarding, and the ride from LaGuardia or JFK into the city.
A car is door to door with no transfers. It becomes the better option when:
- you are travelling as a family or a small group, where the per-person cost drops sharply;
- you have luggage, equipment, or children in car seats;
- your start or end point is far from a station, such as a suburb or a New York area airport;
- you want to work, take calls or sleep without changing vehicles.
What the trip is like
Our cars have Wi-Fi and bottled water, and the rear seats in the S-Class and our SUVs are made for long drives. Tell your chauffeur if you want a quiet car. Short comfort stops on the way are fine, and planned stops, such as collecting a colleague in Providence, can be added when you book.
Where we drop off
Anywhere in the five boroughs and beyond: hotels, offices, apartments, and the departures curb at JFK, LaGuardia or Newark if your flight leaves from New York. For airports, tell us your flight time and we suggest a pickup time with a sensible buffer.
Planning tips
- If you have a fixed arrival time, book with at least an hour of buffer.
- Friday afternoon departures from Boston are the slowest of the week.
- For a same-day return, book by the hour or as a round trip.
- Groups of four to six fit comfortably in one SUV with luggage.
